Andrei Arshavin, the 27 year old's Euro 2008 performances for Russia were noticed by many people inluding managers of many football clubs. Interest was shown by teams such as Barcelona, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal.
However, the £20 million price tag has been a bit off-putting when you look at his fitness levels, character and temper, which makes you think whether he will be able to cope playing many games at the highest level. And with Arsenal’s youth policy and purchasing rationale, it seems highly unlikely that the Emirates board would meet that valuation anyway.
“The strategy of the club is to sell every year and to buy less expensive players” said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
“We manage at Arsenal to maintain all our football ambitions - national and European - while having to free up - for 17 more years - an annual surplus of £24million to pay for our stadium.”
“The club’s strategy is to favor the policy of youngsters ahead of stars and to count on the collective quality of our game.”
Now, Mr Wenger, who did show some interest in Arshavin initially, is not likely to follow the Russian playmaker's signature.
As the transfer market opens in a couple of months, ArsenalFC.co.nr would like to know your opinion on this matter. Should Wenger scrap the policy and sign the playmaker who would be a good replacement for Alex Hleb or ignore all the hype about Andrei Arshavin or do you believe that the asking value of £20 million is simply ridiculous?
